OUR STORY
Elkin grew on the waterpower of Elkin Creek. In 1877 Alexander Chatham and Thomas Lenoir Gwyn opened a small woolen mill that became Chatham Manufacturing, the town's largest industry, known for Chatham blankets. The railroad arrived in 1890, and brick stores followed. Today those same streets and creeks carry the Mountains-to-Sea Trail, the Overmountain Victory Trail, the E&A Rail Trail, and the Yadkin River Blue Trail.
